Faces of FCSS Jo

Jonelle Dunkley,
Community Programmer,
Viking/Beaver FCSS

Hi, I’m Jonelle, and I’ve been the Community Programmer with Viking/Beaver FCSS for six years. Like most programmers, I wear many hats, and I truly enjoy the variety and the connections this role brings to our communities. My journey with FCSS is also personal. When my parents moved here to be closer to their grandchildren, they reached out for both supports and volunteer opportunities. My mom often spoke about the kindness she experienced, and that left a lasting impression on me. So when I was later offered an interview, I felt truly honored to join.

Outside of FCSS, I run Pinkicing Self-Esteem Workshops, where I blend empowerment and creativity. I’ve self published four books, created several self-help courses, and love writing whenever I can. Most importantly, I’m a proud mom of two boys and recently married my husband, Chris.

In my role at FCSS, I host the “But First, Love Yourself!” workshop every February, facilitate our three-week NextGen Summer Fun Program and help organize the Christmas Hamper and Angel Tree programs for our service area. I’m also passionate about men’s mental health and partner yearly with the Buddy Up campaign! I also run Money Mindset Sessions to help people take a fresh look at their finances, manage intake for the Viking/Holden and Area Food Bank, and support the CVITP free tax program. I also assist community members with filling out forms and navigating resources. Being part of FCSS has been a natural fit for me and it allows me to serve others while empowering people every day.

“Jo’s also responsible for the million little tasks that are required to keep our office functional. She has a deep understanding of and appreciation for the importance of preventative supports, and is a key voice in local programming development, as well as delivery. We are extremely fortunate that she has chosen to invest her skills, talents, and voice with us at Viking/Beaver.”

Dawn Chrystian, Director of Viking/Beaver Family and Community Support Services

How have your life experiences helped in your role?
My life experiences have taught me empathy, resilience, and the power of listening without judgment. They help me see people not just for their struggles, but for their strengths and potential.

Why did you get involved in FCSS?
I wanted to make a difference close to home and have always been passionate about strong, supportive communities. FCSS felt like a natural fit—it allows me to serve others while connecting people to resources and opportunities.

What have you learned in your role with FCSS?
I’ve learned that small acts of support can change lives, and collaboration makes us stronger. Most of all, I’ve seen how resilient people truly are when given the right support.
