FCSSAA Statement on the 2026-27 Alberta Provincial Budget
Edmonton, AB – Funding support for Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) maintained in Budget 2026/27
The Family and Community Support Services Association of Alberta (FCSSAA) acknowledges the Government of Alberta’s recent decision to hold its funding allocation for Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) in the 2026/27 budget. In an extremely difficult budget year, we appreciate that funding to municipalities and Métis Settlements is being maintained.
In 2026–27, $105 million is allocated through FCSS to support the development and delivery of preventive social services across Alberta.
“The complexity of Albertans’ needs and the demand for preventive and early intervention supports mean that this flat funding represents a real and growing challenge for local programs. However, despite population growth and the significant inflationary pressures on FCSS, Albertans can trust we will continue to do our best to develop and deliver the preventive social services that strengthen families and build resilient communities across the province,” said Kayla Blanchette, President of the Family and Community Support Services Association of Alberta (FCSSAA).
FCSS is one of Alberta’s most cost-effective and impactful programs.
Municipalities and Métis Settlements are working hard to meet rising needs with limited resources, and the value of prevention has never been clearer.
We agree with Minister Horner that “Our responsibility is to the families raising kids, the workers keeping our economy moving and the communities people rely on every day,” and offer that FCSS remains one of the most effective ways to ensure today’s challenges are not passed on to the next generation.
When prevention is properly funded, pressures on health care, justice and crisis-response systems decrease, reducing the long-term costs for all Albertans.
Our advocacy for programs and services that reduce downstream pressures on more intensive systems will continue.
We remain committed to working collaboratively with the Government of Alberta and sector partners to ensure FCSS is recognized as the provincial leader in preventive social services. Together, we can build a funding model that strengthens the wellbeing of families, youth, seniors and communities across Alberta.
The FCSSAA and province-wide FCSS programs remain dedicated to ensuring the sustainability of prevention programming. We will continue in these meaningful discussions with the hope of seeing FCSS programs appropriately funded in the 2027/28 Budget.
